Joost Flamand is the diplomatic advisor to Prime Minister Rutte for European Affairs. His responsibilities include both bilateral and EU affairs. In the framework of the EU, in recent years his job has come to be known as the "EU sherpa". His main focus is the preparation of the European Council meetings. This involves frequent contacts with EU sherpa's of the other members of the European Council, a circuit that has grown in importance with the increasing role of the European Council in EU policy making. In the Dutch system, with its relatively small prime minister's office, other ministries like Foreign Affairs, Finance and Economic Affairs are closely involved in preparing the European Council meetings as well.

Attending the lecture is free of charge but please register at epdenhaag@europarl.europa.eu.

The lecture is followed by a network drink.
